• Stress relief – Relaxation of the muscles helps to relieve stress. Studies have shown that massage lowers levels of the hormone Cortisol. Cortisol is produced in times of stress, killing cells used by the immune system to fight disease. Thus, reducing stress helps to fight disease and illness.

• Reduces blood pressure – Massage has shown to relieve hypertension. The exact action is not known, but it is believed that massage stimulates receptors linked to the vagus nerve, which is linked directly to the brain. The vagus nerve is responsible for regulating blood pressure. Studies show that as little as 10 minutes of massage three times per week is enough to reduce blood pressure.

• Pain relief – Massage reduces pain throughout the entire body. It is not necessary to massage areas of pain because massaging any area triggers the brain to stop releasing a chemical known as “substance P.” Substance P allows pain sensations to be triggered by nerves.
